Acme Markets is a chain of supermarkets that operates on the east side of the United States. Acme is a subsidiary of Albertsons. It was founded in 1891.

History[]

In 1891, Irish immigrants Samuel Robinson and Robert Crawford began Acme. In 1917, Acme merged with American Stores. Acme was a rival of the A&P stores. Acme made a new logo in the 60s. In the 60s, Acme expanded, by putting stores next to other chains like Kmart, which was really popular. Also in the 60s, Acme started Super Saver Foods. Acme later purchased stores from Kroger and A&P and in the early 80s, from the bankrupt Food Fair chain. American Stores was sold to Skaggs. Later, American Stores purchased Jewel. In 2000, Albertsons, purchased American Stores, and later Albertsons was purchased by SuperValu in 2006. Since 2013, Acme is owned by Albertsons again.
